A whole plethora of services have appeared in the past two years: instagrams, twitters, social networks, self publishing networks. Oink, Stamped, Nosh, and a whole list of voting engines. Where does your history lie? Do you still care about having your own jpeg stored on your drive, do you care about still having the photo after all is said and done. Face it, companies die. Facebook will be gone, Apple will be gone, Instagram will be gone, twitpic will be gone. And where goes your history and memories and experiences? Maybe we should take better care of them.
I like Google and WordPress because these two platforms have historically been very prompt and responsible in providing tools to export your personal data. It gives me reassurance that they care about the users, even if they choose to discontinue a particular product line. Not many companies would invest effort in a discontinued product.
