thaipusam

38/365: thaipusam day

Im glad I did not try to go to the temple at 3am! it would certainly have been much harder to take photos. I had realised that (1) i havent properly gone to watch thaipusam in singapore despite being here for so many years (2) my camera was itching to do something.

Despite having an idea of what they do, ie all the body piercing and khavadi carrying…, it was still quite an experience seeing them getting pierced. Perhaps its a good thing I didn’t take any video. There’s just such a long story to tell. I spent about 2 hours in the temple at serangoon road. in case you were wondering, i am not becoming indian.

it’s just, you know.., watching them go through all the rites and praying and offerings and coconuts and milk pots and hooks and powder and flames and i dont know.

i think its my first time with so many local photographers. very exciting atmosphere. a free rein to take photos, with some of them being very daring/intrusive and going right up to the people, i guess that’s how to get super nice close up portraits, gotta do that, but im still not comfortable with it. lots of nice cameras and lenses too. but i shall refrain from lens-pron. i did wish i have one more camera body for separate wide angle and tele lens. but bleh, such weight and luxury. my expensive 70-200mm was great though, all the pretty photos were from that. you can tell that the wider angle ones are just not so sharp, colorful, and !!!. there was a fair bit of rushing to change lenses (bagpack is inconvenient for this, sling better. but bagpack is less heavy. how?), trying to get into good positions, and running around the room. and also it was funny being a barefoot photographer. haha. no shoes in the temple.

i dont know how some of them can still sorta dance around with the khavadi on them. gosh. so insane. i wish they wouldnt practice such painful rituals. its banned in india.

a fair bit of drums music. loud chanting/cheering when something major is being poked into the flesh, typically the tongue one. *faints*

i was surprised that people just arrive and do their preparations and some friends/family help them out, and then they just walk the road as and when they want. like pretty individual instead of a big organised procession thingy as i previously thought. and the temple was quite haphazard too. free for all. but then who wants anything

90 photos on flickr. Parental Guidance advised.

you know, i see all those photos by people running around with f/2.8 lenses and i am soooo jealous. grah.

new york i love you

on a spur-of-the-moment change-of-plans impatience i went to watch the movie of the above title alone. the first film paris je t’aime was great, and i would recommend it to my friends, if only just because i think that they either know paris, or can tahan weird films. its a collection of short films anyway, designed to capture the life of a city, its people, how they love the city, and romance in general in the city. in totally bizarre ways. but hey, dont you feel that your own love life is unique too?

alright, so anyway the new york i<3u film. well i wouldnt say i totally loved it. i dunno. maybe its just new york. or american culture. it just makes me sigh. perhaps i was wondering whats up with all the sex and sexual language. *rolls eyes* i hope that their idea of dating and romance isnt just about sex, whatever the reality is.

spoilers ahead, sortof.

i felt the paris one was more bizarre and out of the world. but well it is a french film ya know. still, both are better than other hollywood entertainment.

ash

ash red, that must be what you have worn on your dainty lips today, I cannot imagine what else it could be. red for the feminine colour of life, inseparable and strong; mixed with an ashen grey, like the dubiousness of everything else.

quiet silent darkness. fearing sleep or waking or solitude. goodnight.

more nonsense from me

I think Singapore is a very dangerous city.

why do I say that when we all know (why can’t I do italics on iPod
notepad) that it is oh so safe? because:
1. that taxi touts at Clarke quay will rip you off if you’re an angmo.
worse if you’re towing an Asian girl, but then you deserve it, just
joking
2. the Newton hawkers will give you extra large crustaceans and charge
you extra^2
3. you might get sexually harassed at HDB neighborhoods. we have an
exceptional problem of dangerous enclosed elevators
4. sometimes you unknowingly walk into a private elevator marked out
by some unsavory person’s pee.
5. dubious doctors might perform dubious cosmetic plastic surgery on
you at dubious prices
6. the sinsehs (aka online as herbalists) might break your bones when
perform healing massages. that’s if they’re not offering you roots and
bark concoction (serious, I swear!) or sticking voodoo needles into
you. welcome to 21st century Chinese tribal medicine
7. you already know about the govt fines and parking tickets
8. latest biggest swindle going on is casino of course. two bright new
glittering megapoliss. as they say, the house always wins, but what if
the govt is behind them…
9. crime is high in the red light district
10. we have gangs, well not so well known, but still a problem
11. if designer drugs don’t kill you, the police almost certainly will
12. it’s still possible to get molested at new year parties.
13. you get fleeced during CNY by those kids, don’t know why
14. and once more during Xmas. but this time by everyone, and the
retailers
15. mo bargaining at the proper shops but somehow nobody ever pays
full price for their clothes
16. the locals will always tell you that you got ripped off on that
last electronic gadget you bought.
17. hawker and coffeeshop food will probably give you diarrhea, look
at their hygiene standards
18. no drinking and driving

statistics’ a funny thing always. for example maybe 0.001% of the
population is murdered each year. but to me, I’m either alive 0% or
dead 100%. hence, welcome, and take care.

les rêves et les cauchemars.

[last night]
1.40am and not sleepy. laid in bed sorely missing people and feeling
alone in the whole wide world, or at least in south-easy asia. slept
on my back and had a nightmare. tried to get out of a flooded
building. the water was only slightly more than ankle deep but it was
so hard to lift my legs and it felt neverending. woke up with the
feeling that my brain, yet again, hasn’t slept. why. turned over to my
side so that hopefully I would still have a few hours of decent sleep
left.
darn alarm.

and then and then and then what
